The Communications Minister, Alhaji Cham also spoke about the impact created by QCell. He mentioned that it was a good decision to grant license to QCell who did not come to crowd the market, but in fact open it up even further. The minister asserted that the inauguration of QCell is another giant step in the efforts to make The Gambia an information and knowledge based society through the adoption of new emerging technologies in-line with Vision 2020. QCell started operations in The Gambia in July 2009 and has registered remarkable success within the past twelve months with an introduction of the latest 3G technology in The Gambia, a country of about 1.5million people. QCell is an investment of over 1billion Gambian Dalasi (GMD) and currently prides itself of Gambia’s best corporate infrastructure. Most importantly to the ordinary user, apart from quality services provided, QCell has branded itself the cheapest mobile network service provider. Calls in The Gambia have never been cheaper than GMD2.50 per minute when making calls to any network. Mobile internet has never been faster and the introduction of the USB data card has revolutionized how individuals and corporate institutions gain internet access. The Vice Chancellor of the University of The Gambia calls the data card his ‘second wife’. The President acknowledged that since the University vice chancellor rates the data card that high, then it is indeed a good product. It could be recalled that QCell launched its worldwide roaming services six months ago with 550 roaming partners in over 209 countries. The cost of a QCell SIM card is still the same as the cost of other SIM cards in spite of its superior technology and additional services. As part of the Official Opening, everyone went home with a QCell branded gift bag packed with a range of promotional goodies. |
