MAY DAY SPORTS: QCell puts up Brilliant Performance

march_passInternational Workers day is a celebration of the social and economic achievements of the international labor movement. May Day in the Gambia is commonly celebrated with sports events held at the Independence Stadium in The Greater Banjul area. All public and private institutions take part in a march pass and a  range of sports activities.

May 2010 will be remembered as the first time that QCell participated in the May Day sports activities. Two weeks of training after working hours was enough to spring the orange QCell team in to the top 5. As it was reported in the news papers, "QCell’s performance was extremely remarkable."

The Gambia’s newest GSM Company QCell put up a brilliant performance and an incredible display of skill, discipline and teamwork which sent waves of enthusiasm and a heart beat to the life of the crowd.

The Male relay team put up a stunning performance with the first two atheletes taking the lead, despite slight technical miscommunication encountered, the team still emerged 3rd position. The female relay team put up an astounding run for the victory, opening up a gap that could not be closed by the most giant of steps from any athlete and finally keeping it together for the top spot at the finishing line.

The female team had to put up with some athletes that are members of the Gambia National Athletes team. Yet, the team achieved nothing less than second position in the female 100m and the three legged race. Howevere, another member of the QCell female team came out first in the potato race.

The Tug of War, a display of muscle strength, stamina and sharp concentration was the event that caught the eye of the crowd. From the onset, QCell beat up the most formidable teams in the competition including the Gambia Ports Authority and The Independent Electoral Commission. Qualifying on to the Semi-finals, the QCell team took on the defending champions Gambia Armed Forces, known to be best and unshakeable. We will tell you, they did not only shake, the solders were on their toes when QCell stretched them to breaking point. This stired the crowd and got them fired up with everyone in the stadium cheering the QCell Team, even the other GSM companies joined in our support.  The soldiers on the outside could not stand still, you could see it in their faces that they had given up. However, with the same team battling from the start, with only one substitute, the soldiers took advantage and finally gained the upper hand. But they came back to express their respects for QCell for no other team had given them such a hard time. You could see some of their athletes finding it difficult to walk properly after the game. QCell are Heroes, everyone cheered the team.

The Volleyball games took place on the following day. QCell defeated some strong opponents including Africell. The match between QCell and Africell was a mouth watering one that a lot of people followed with keen interest. Everyone in the court including other GSM companies cheered the QCell team. Despite the opponents adding hired players to their team, the QCell team was still able to thrash them to qualify for the finals where we emerged second position.

Overall, a Heroic performance from QCell earned the Gambia’s only 3G GSM Company 4th position out of more than 50 private and public companies. However, in the GSM Market, QCell emerged 1st position.

QCell is more than just another GSM company. QCell is an embodiment of talent, energy and visionaries. That is why QCell is out to expand the world of everyone that makes use of telecommunications.
